The Žilina Conservatory Big Band is now an integral part of Slovak musical life. In the context of Slovak culture it is a rarity – the only school big band in Slovakia that has not only lasted 30 years of activity, but its level has been equal to professional jazz ensembles internationally for many years.
Over the long years of its existence, the big band has educated a number of excellent jazz players – former students of the Žilina Conservatory, who today play at the highest professional level. To mention just a few: Klaudius Kováč, Richard Rikkon, Peter Solárik, Miloslav Suchomel, Marián Ševčík, Radovan Tariška, Branislav Belorid, Lukáš Oravec and many others. After the untimely death of the ensemble’s founding conductor Miroslav Belorid, who brought the ensemble to an outstanding international level, saxophonist Marek Pastírik took over the leadership in 2011 and recorded a number of domestic and international successes with the ensemble.
